A weak area of low pressure covers the North Island today with a chance of afternoon downpours, especially in the east with thunderstorms. Rain for the east of the South Island with cooler southerlies, drier in the west.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A mix of sun and cloud with light winds, afternoon sea breezes. Isolated showers may develop in the afternoon especilly about Northland, southern Waikato and inland Bay Of Plenty. Showers turning heavy with thunderstorms about inland Bay Of Plenty then easing later in the day.
Highs: 24-28
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly sunny, some cloud builds about inland hills and ranges in the afternoon which may lead to isolated heavy showers. Showers then clearing later in the evening. Light winds then afternoon westerly quarter breezes.
Highs: 22-24
Eastern North Island
A mostly sunny morning then showers develop in the afternoon as light winds tend east to southeast. Showers may be heavy with thunderstorms in isolated spots then easing in the evening.
Highs: 23-27
Wellington
A mostly sunny morning then cloud increases from afternoon as southerlies freshen, late evening patchy showers.
High: 22
Marlborough & Nelson
Morning sun then cloud increases from midday as southeasterly winds develop, some rain in the evening as southeasterly winds freshen.
Highs: 22-24
Canterbury
A few showers then turning to rain around midday about South Canterbury before spreading northwards, clearing overnight. Rain may be persistent about inland areas for a time in the afternoon / evening. South to southwest winds freshen in the morning.
Highs: 14-18
West Coast
Morning sun then cloud thickens in the afternoon bringing areas of rain inland about the ranges. Light winds pick up from the southeast after midday.
Highs: 19-24
Southland & Otago
Morning showers then afternoon sunny spells about Southland, showers then some rain for at time about Otago before clearing in the evening. South to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 14-15
