A low passes over the South Island today with a front clearing the North Island to the east this afternoon. Unstable conditions possible about parts of the upper South Island from afternoon.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Rain or showers, heavy about the Bay Of Plenty with possible thunderstorms then mostly clearing by midday with sunny areas increasing. Rain, heavy falls and possible thunderstorms lingering about eastern Bay Of Plenty till afternoon then easing and clearing in the evening. Only Northland and Auckland is mainly dry with sunny areas for much of the day and northwesterly breezes. Elsewhere northerly winds tend northwest after midday.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain easing early on to showers about Taranaki and elsewhere by midday then clearing away in the evening. A few areas of sun starting to become more frequent as the afternoon moves along. Northwesterly winds.

Eastern North Island
Rain about the Wairarapa clearing away around midday, dry initially further north then rain moves in before midday but then clears mid afternoon. After rain clears away expect sun and hot temperatures, northerly winds.

Wellington
Early morning rain clears then expect sunny areas, chance of a few isolated showers returning in the afternoon then clearing evening. Breezy northwesterly winds.

Marlborough & Nelson
Any early rain clears about Marlborough then expect sunny areas, cloud builds again from late morning then isolated showers develop in the afternoon. Showers could become heavy with thunderstorms after midday then clearing in the evening. Nelson sees cloudy areas and spells of rain during the day, clearing in the evening. Northerly winds.

Canterbury
A mainly cloudy day with a few morning showers or drizzle patches, some parts may remain dry especially in North Canterbury. Then in the afternoon rain moving in and becoming more widespread with the odd heavy fall possible, a chance of thunderstorms too mainly North Canterbury. Rain clears later in the evening or overnight. Southwest winds.

Cloudy with spells of rain, clearing in the evening. Light winds.

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy with showers and southwesterly winds, Southland sees long dry spells during the day. Showers clearing overnight.
