Tuesday’s Headlines (x3): A few heavy showers still, Frosty to start inland, Low and front end of the week

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…

A FEW HEAVY SHOWERS STILL ABOUT

Cold upper air is still lurking over the North Island today, mainly in the east. This leads to a few heavy isolated showers, perhaps even some thunder.

At the other end of the country, Fiordland has rain with a chance of heavy falls and thunder from evening. Yes the upper air is cold but not as cold as further north, the extra ingredients we have down south are higher surface moisture plus orographic uplift caused by the Fiordland mountains.

ANOTHER FROSTY START INLAND

Temperatures are cold again this morning, inland parts of both Islands will be below zero at dawn this morning.

MAIN FEATURE END OF THE WEEK – FRONT AND LOW

Here are the latest maps showing the movement of a low and front at the end of this week.

Overall yes there will be heavy rain in spots as this front moves through but the current outlook is not looking as problematic compared to our last front moving in from the Tasman which brought very heavy rain to the upper North Island a week ago.
