Tuesday’s Headlines: Warm in the east, Winds still strong, Cold nights inland.

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

WARM IN THE EAST

There hasn’t been a lot of warmth lately, but eastern regions Canterbury northwards will reach into the mid teens today, perhaps even hitting 17 for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. The same applies again on Wednesday.

The below modeled maps will be a couple of degrees lower than they should be in the east thanks to a westerly quarter airflow producing a slight foehn effect.

WINDS STILL STRONG FOR SOME BUT WILL EASE SOON

Southwesterlies are still a bit blustery for some up the western side of the country. The far south experiences the strong winds with coastal gales still likely.

Wednesday sees winds back of a touch then Thursday we can see the influence of high pressure moving in and winds becoming light for most, just the eastern North Island may still continue to see fresh southwesterlies on Thursday but these will have gone by Friday.

There are a few watches and warnings out by Metservice, you can see them here.

COLD NIGHTS INLAND

Temperatures are cold, it is winter after all. Inland areas will experience frosty conditions during the nights, especially the inner South Island.

The upper North Island will be the warmest with overnight lows in the low double figure arena, Thursday morning has cooler lows thanks to lighter winds and less cloud.
