Check our free and live Lightning Tracker – close to 500 strikes per hour this evening.
More heavy showers and thunderstorms are spreading across northern New Zealand Sunday night and across Monday morning.
Rain radar images over the past 60 minutes show an intense band moving from Kaitaia to Whangarei, but should ease in the next 30 minutes or so, however more heavy showers are following it. There remains a risk for isolated tornadoes for regions north of Whangarei overnight tonight.
Meanwhile heavy showers should spread back in to Auckland Sunday evening and throughout Monday morning.
WeatherWatch.co.nz says there is a slight risk of a rumble of thunder in Auckland but most showers should be thunder free although very heavy.
Motorists are advised to take extreme care tonight from Waikato northwards due to the sudden heavy showers.

Hi Pete,
Looking relatively dry and cold (and cloudy) for the next 24 hours. Probably not the most positive sounding forecast….bit gloomy and dull.
Cheers
