Thursday’s News: Colder change now moving up the SI – Warm today ahead of it, cooler NZwide tomorrow

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..

SOUTHWEST CHANGE MOVES IN

A cold front hits the lower South Island around midday, reaching the upper South Island overnight then moving north over the North Island on Friday.

Expect rain and a reasonable temperature drop as this front moves through, very warm in the east before hand with temperatures for Canterbury reaching into the late twenties this afternoon.

Southwesterlies will be strong and gusty in the east as this change moves through, Friday into Saturday sees strong southerlies with a chance of coastal gales for parts of the North Island, especially through Cook Strait and up the east coast (east coast is more Saturday).

Despite this unsettled weather moving in there shouldn’t be too many issues apart from having to pull out some warm clothes as we are about to move into summer. There is going to be some heavy rain potential for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne from Friday through to Sunday morning, Metservice have a rain watch issued for this, click here for more.

A risk of heavy rain for Fiordland today, this eases from late afternoon.

WARM TODAY, COLD TOMORROW

The cold front as noted above will see warm temperatures ahead of it, especially for eastern regions then temperatures will tumble.
