Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..
FEW SHOWERS IN THE WEST, SUNNY IN THE EAST
A reasonably standard weather pattern over the country today with a west to southwesterly airflow spinning out of a high in the Tasman Sea.
Western regions are going to see cloud and a few showers meanwhile in the east it will be mostly sunny and warmer, a coastal sea breeze this afternoon means eastern regions may be a touch cooler towards the ocean than a touch further inland.
A warm front brushing Southland and Otago brings cloud this afternoon.
VERY STRONG WINDS SATURDAY MORNING – CANTERBURY
A front pushes onto the South Island overnight Friday bringing heavy rain to the West Coast, reaching the lower North Island on Saturday morning, there may be some thunder. In behind the front as it clears to the north expect very strong northwesterly winds for Canterbury on Saturday morning, gale to severe gale winds look to develop then easing during the afternoon.
Apart from it being election day the Ellesmere A&P show is on this Saturday, it would pay to be mindful of the strong wind conditions in relation to tents and so forth.
Winds through Cook Strait are very strong on Saturday also, they will ease later in the day.
Keep up to date with weather watches and warnings from Metservice here.
THUNDER POTENTIAL INCREASES ON SUNDAY – WEST COAST
Another front pushes north over the South Island on Sunday bringing another round of heavy rain to the West Coast, with this rain comes a higher chance of thunder than the front early in the morning on Saturday.
For thunderstorm potential coming up see Metservice’s thunderstorm outlook here.
