Thursday’s national forecast – Warm in the east

A northeasterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, tilting a little more to the north for the South Island where temperatures become very warm this afternoon in the east. A low to the northwest brings rain into Northland later.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Increasing cloud, the odd shower in areas exposed to the east (coastal BOP up to eastern Northland). Rain moves into Northland this evening, rain reaches Auckland overnight. Freshening east to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 20-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy, isolated afternoon showers about some inland areas especially the Central North Island, one or two could become heavy. Light winds tend onshore in the afternoon.
Highs: 22-25

Eastern North Island

Sun and increasing high cloud, Wairarapa may see an afternoon shower. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 23-26

Wellington

A mix of sun and cloud. Northerlies.
Highs: 22-25

Marlborough & Nelson

A mix of sun and cloud, Tasman and Nelson see a shower or two. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 23-27

Canterbury

Mostly sunny, a touch of high cloud. Northwesterly winds however tending east to northeast in the afternoon near the coast.
Highs: 25-30

West Coast

Mostly cloudy with a few showers, more so from afternoon. Showers clear later in the evening north of Greymouth. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 21-23

Southland & Otago
A mix of sun and cloud, light north to northwesterly winds. Northeasterlies for coastal Otago with cooler temperatures.
Highs: 23-30
