A large low lies in the Tasman Sea today, the outer edges of this low extends over New Zealand drawing in a northeasterly airflow over the country. Winds come in from the southeast for the lower and eastern South Island. Becoming unstable this afternoon especially for the North Island.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, possibly heavy with thunder then easing in the evening. Overnight heavy showers may move back into Northland and Auckland. Light northerly quarter winds.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, becoming heavy in the afternoon then clearing at night. Chance of a thunderstorm mainly inland. Light northerlies.
Highs: 18-22
Eastern North Island
Mostly cloudy, a few spits possible. Showers develop in the afternoon especially about the ranges, some becoming heavy with thunderstorms then clearing overnight. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 20-23
Wellington
A dry morning, sun possible then showers develop in the afternoon, some may become heavy especially inland about the ranges then clearing at night. Light northerlies.

Marlborough & Nelson
Cloudy areas, dry in the morning then showers develop afternoon, some may be heavy before clearing at night. Northerly winds.

Canterbury
Partly cloudy, isolated showers develop about inland areas in the afternoon, some may become heavy with thunder then showers spreading to the coast at night. Light winds.
Highs: 18-22
West Coast
Partly cloudy, a few showers, mainly for Fiordland. In the evening showers spread elsewhere. Light northeasterlies.

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy with a few showers, especially for Southland. Isolated showers may become heavy in the afternoon for inland areas. Conditions dry out in the evening for coastal areas. Light southerly winds.
