Thursday’s national forecast – Some instability in the north

A weak ridge of high pressure lies over the South Island today meanwhile a low passes by the northeast of the North Island away to the south.

North Island

Cloudy in the east with showers and south to southwesterly winds, rain this morning for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne eases, this evening conditions may start to dry out. A mix of sun and cloud out west, showers this afternoon developing for Bay Of Plenty across into the Manawatu may be heavy with a risk of isolated thunder then easing this evening, winds coming in from the southwest out west. An isolated shower or two may spring up for eastern Northland this afternoon also.

South Island

Mostly sunny with light winds then afternoon sea breezes, east to northeasterly winds along the east coast becoming a little fresh this afternoon. Morning drizzle for Fiordland clears.
