Thursday’s national forecast – High pressure moving in

A high starts to move in over the country today bringing settled weather however a low out to the east is stubborn, this brings a few showers and gusty southwesterlies for some eastern coastal areas.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly sunny, a few clouds at times. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloud breaks to a few sunny spells from afternoon, morning showers about the Central North Island clear. Taranaki has partly cloudy skies. Southwesterlies die out in the evening.
Highs: 10-18

Eastern North Island

Mostly cloudy, a few showers for Wairarapa along the coast to just south of Napier, a few showers may also clip Mahia Peninsula. Strong southwesterlies with gales about the coast but gradually easing, especially later in the day.
Highs: 13-18

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, the odd shower, more so in the morning. South to southwesterly winds, gales in the morning, easing later in the day.
Highs: 13-14

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny, southwesterlies for Marlborough, gusty about the coast. Nelson has light morning southwesterlies tending to the north in the afternoon.
Highs: 16-18

Canterbury

Cloud gradually decreases, and sun increases during the day, a few morning showers near the coast clear. Showers may hang about Banks Peninsula and the Kaikoura coast for much of the day. Southwesterly winds ease.
Highs: 12-14

West Coast

Sunny, light winds tend southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 16-19

Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny for Southland and Central Otago, coastal Otago has cloud breaking to afternoon sunny spells. Easterly winds.
Highs: 13-15
