Thursday’s national forecast – Heavy rain West Coast

A front moves northwards over the South Island today bringing heavy rain to the West Coast and a few scattered spits or falls out east, the front reaches the lower North Island overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A mix of sun and cloud, a few showers for Waikato. Northwesterly winds, tending more westerly for Bay Of Plenty.
Highs: 22-26

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy with a few showers, cloud thickens later in the day with showers becoming a little more widespread, rain overnight. Northwesterly winds freshen.
Highs: 20-24

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny, some high cloud from afternoon. Winds from the northwest but expect afternoon northerlies for coastal Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.
Highs: 24-28

Wellington

Mostly cloudy with gusty northerlies, strong from afternoon. A few spots of rain possible mainly in the north.
Highs: 21-23

Marlborough & Nelson

High cloud and some sun, evening rain especially for Nelson. North to northwesterly winds freshen during the day.
Highs: 24-26

Canterbury

High cloud, some rain in the high country. A few spots of rain south of Banks Peninsula in the morning then further north in the afternoon. Winds from the north or northwest but tending to the southwest late afternoon or evening.
Highs: 23-25

West Coast

Rain with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, easing late afternoon or evening as northwesterlies change southwest.
Highs: 19-21

Southland & Otago
Morning rain then sun breaks through in the afternoon, a few showers remaining about coastal parts. Coastal Otago may not see showers till afternoon where one or two may become heavy then easing later in the day. Northwesterlies change westerly in the morning.
Highs: 20-25
