A front moves onto the far north today bringing heavy rain, southerly quarter winds and a cold front brings rain or showers to the eastern South Island.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy, the odd shower in the northeast from Bay Of Plenty up through to eastern Northland. Rain moves into Northland around midday, becoming heavy then spreading southwards to reach Auckland later in the evening. Heavy rain for Coromandel overnight. Northeasterly winds strengthen with coastal gales possible.
Highs: 14 – 16
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy, chance of a shower, southeasterlies strengthen from afternoon with coastal gales later especially for southern Taranaki.
Highs: 11 – 16
Eastern North Island
Sun and some high cloud, a few showers develop about Wairarapa in the afternoon with southerlies. Showers spread further north later in the evening or overnight.
Highs: 15 – 17
Wellington
Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, southeasterlies strengthen from midday, gales later through Cook Strait.
Highs: 13 – 14
Marlborough & Nelson
Partly cloudy, a few showers about Golden Bay and the Marlborough Sounds. Showers becoming restricted to eastern and southern Marlborough in the evening. Southeasterlies freshen from afternoon, gales for Golden Bay and the Sounds later on.
Highs: 13 – 15
Canterbury
Rain spreads northwards during the morning with south to southeasterly winds, easing to showers in the evening. Snow to 800m at first, lowering to 500m late afternoon or evening.
Highs: 8 – 14
West Coast
Rain clears South Westland in the morning, dry otherwise with sun and high cloud. Southeasterly winds freshen.
Highs: 12 – 16
Southland & Otago
Early rain eases to showers then clearing (snow to 400m), showers may not clear Otago till afternoon, sunny areas increase after showers clear as southeasterlies tend to the east.
Highs: 7 – 9
