Thursday’s national forecast – Fronts move through with rain in the west and north

A series of fronts push over New Zealand today with heavy rain for western regions, thunderstorms possible too. Drier out east generally but a few spits may move through.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain, becoming heavy late morning onwards in some areas then easing in the evening as northwesterlies change westerly.
Highs: 18-21

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with occasional showers. Widespread rain moves through in the evening as a front passes over, possibly heavy with thunderstorms. Northwesterlies freshen.
Highs: 16-20

Eastern North Island

Some sun and high cloud, scattered rain may spread into Gisborne from the west, clearing evening. In the evening scattered rain spreads into Wairarapa from the west. Winds from the north or northwest.
Highs: 20-24

Wellington

Cloudy areas with the odd spit or shower. Some widespread rain for a time late afternoon / early evening, possibly heavy with thunder then easing later. Northwesterlies becoming strong midday onwards with gales likely through Cook Strait.
Highs: 18-19

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny for Marlborough, some cloud about the Sounds and perhaps Nelson with the odd shower. In the afternoon becoming a bit cloudier with some rain (more so Nelson) as a front passes over then clearing up in the evening. Northwesterlies, gusty for Marlborough.
Highs: 18-20

Canterbury

Thickening cloud, late morning, or early afternoon a few spots of rain may spread from the west with heavy falls up in the high country then clearing across the Plains with sun breaking through. Northwesterlies become gusty.
Highs: 15-21

West Coast

Rain pushes through during the morning with heavy falls, possible thunderstorms too. Easing back a touch from afternoon as northwesterlies change a little more to the west. Overnight some heavy rain moves back in with further thunderstorms possible and this time some hail.
Highs: 14-17

Southland & Otago
Rain eases to showers during the morning for Southland. Rain for Central Otago, heavy about the Lakes District then easing, closer towards the coast conditions are drier with afternoon sun. Northwesterlies, becoming gusty in the afternoon for Southland.
Highs: 13-17
