Thursday’s national forecast – Front moves in from the Tasman

A front flings out from a low in the Tasman sea today bringing rain to the North Island and eventually the upper South Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly cloudy with the odd light shower, rain moves into Northland in the morning then spreads southwards during the afternoon, there may be a few heavy falls. Gusty to strong northeasterlies tend northerly later in the day then rain eases.
Highs: 16-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
High cloud with some sun, cloudier for Taranaki and Kapiti with the odd shower. During the afternoon rain sweeps in from the north spreading everywhere, heavy falls possible for Taranaki. Northeasterlies, strong about Taranaki.
Highs: 11-15

Eastern North Island

High cloud, late afternoon or evening some rain develops spreading from the west. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 15-17

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, some morning drizzle clears then rain pushes in from the north late afternoon or evening. Northeasterlies change southerly overnight.
Highs: 14-16

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly cloudy with drizzle developing during the morning, turning to rain in the afternoon. Northeasterlies change southerly overnight.
Highs: 12-14

Canterbury

Mostly cloudy with showers or drizzle, especially morning then again at night. Drying out in the afternoon for inland South Canterbury. Easterlies tend southwest later in the day.
Highs: 9-14

West Coast

Mostly cloudy, rain pushes southwards into Fiordland during the morning, clearing evening. North of Greymouth is dry then showers or some rain pushes in from the north mid to late afternoon. Northeasterlies tend southeast in the evening.
Highs: 12-16

Southland & Otago
Partly cloudy for Southland, Otago is cloudier with some rain about the Lakes District, perhaps a light shower for North Otago. Light winds, northeasterlies for coastal Otago.
Highs: 10-11
