A front lies over the lower South Island today bringing rain, quite heavy for Fiordland. Northwesterlies ahead of this front with warm temperatures in the east, potentially strong winds too.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A chance of mist or fog in the morning, mostly sunny otherwise with a touch of high cloud. Cloud thickens overnight with a few light showers filtering in. Gentle northerlies.
Highs: 19 – 22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
High cloud and sun, overnight cloud thickens with a few showers moving into Taranaki. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 17 – 20

Eastern North Island

High cloud and sun, warm. Northerly winds, tending northeast in the afternoon for Hawkes Bay.
Highs: 21 – 26

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, strong northerly winds.
Highs: 16 – 17

Marlborough & Nelson

High cloud and some sun, showers overnight for Nelson and the Sounds. North to northwesterly winds, gusty for Marlborough.
Highs: 17 – 21

Canterbury

High cloud with gusty north to northwesterly winds, strong inland. Winds change to the south during the evening, a few late or overnight showers south of Banks Peninsula.
Highs: 19 – 22

West Coast

Rain, heavy falls possibly torrential for Fiordland with thunderstorms. Breezy northerlies.
Highs: 15 – 16

Southland & Otago
Rain with heavy falls for Southland, easing in the evening. Heavy rain about the Lakes District, rain spills into Central and southern Otago, reaching north Otago late afternoon or evening. Snow lowers to 500m for Southland, 700m overnight for Otago. West to northwesterly winds change to the south.
