A large low deepens in the Tasman Sea today, a front flinging out from this low moves down onto the upper North Island from around midday then spreads south. The South Island has a front in the west and one in the south bringing some rain.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sun and thickening cloud, morning fog possible for some inland areas. Rain develops about Northland around midday with the odd shower springing up elsewhere, especially in the east. Rain spreads into Auckland evening then elsewhere overnight. Rain may be heavy in the east as this rain spreads in from the north. Strengthening northeast.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Sunny areas and thickening cloud, morning fog possible inland. Rain develops about Taranaki in the evening then spreading elsewhere overnight. Northeasterlies.

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with high cloud, overnight rain spreads from the west. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 16-18
Wellington
High cloud, rain late overnight. North to northeasterly winds.

Marlborough & Nelson
Partly cloudy, rain develops around midnight for Nelson, spreading into Marlborough overnight. Northerlies.
Highs: 14-16
Canterbury
Mostly cloudy, a few spits or showers from afternoon south of Banks Peninsula, clearing evening. North Canterbury may break to some sun from afternoon but still expect high cloud. Light winds.
Highs: 10-14
West Coast
Mostly cloudy, rain with heavy falls. Fiordland dries out in the morning and parts of Buller may be dry for much of the day, rain for Buller overnight. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 13-16
Southland & Otago
Rain, easing from afternoon and clearing from the north, remaining showers clear Southland and coastal Otago in the evening. Light winds.
