Thursday’s national forecast – Cool southerlies

A cool south to southeasterly airflow lies over the country today, wet weather in the east, drier out west however the upper North Island may see unstable falls this afternoon. The eastern North Island receives some persistent rain.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Fog or low cloud possible then sunny spells, there may be a shower or two about western coastal areas. In the afternoon showers springing up for most, some may become heavy with thunder then easing in the evening as westerlies change southeast.
Highs: 22-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain, easing to showers in the afternoon nearer the coast. The Central North Island sees rain continue all day. Southeasterly winds, strong for coastal parts.
Highs: 14-20

Eastern North Island

Rain, Gisborne may see morning showers then rain from afternoon. Wairarapa sees rain ease to showers in the afternoon. Fresh south to southeasterly winds.
Highs: 15-21

Wellington

Rain eases to showers in the afternoon, fresh south to southeasterly winds, strong through Cook Strait.
Highs: 15-16


Marlborough & Nelson

Morning rain clears then a few sunny spells break through in the afternoon. Fresh southeasterly winds, strong to gale about the outer Sounds and Golden Bay.
Highs: 17-19

Canterbury

Showers or periods of rain at times. Fresh south to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 14-15

West Coast

Mostly sunny, north of about Greymouth expect some cloud, a few showers for Buller. Southeasterly winds, gusty at times.
Highs: 19-22

Southland & Otago
Occasional showers, clearing by evening. Cool southerly winds.
Highs: 14-16
