A cold southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today with wintry showers pushing into the far south and up the eastern side of the country. Western areas are drier and sunnier, morning showers for the western North Island clear away.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, clearing in the afternoon and becoming mostly sunny as fresh southwesterlies tend more to the south.
Highs: 12-14
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, chance of an isolated heavy fall with some small hail, snow to 300m. Showers clearing in the afternoon for Taranaki then elsewhere in the evening. Southwesterlies die away later today.
Highs: 2-11
Eastern North Island
Showers, some may be heavy with small hail then clearing up in the evening however showers continue to push into Wairarapa overnight. Snow flurries to 300m, perhaps as low as 200 to 100m in the morning for Wairarapa. Gusty cold southwesterlies strong about the coast.
Highs: 7-11
Wellington
Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, small hail possible. Showers more likely in the east, longer dry spells in western parts of the region. Snow flurries may fall to near sea level in the morning, lifting to 400m in the evening. Strong gusty southerlies ease a little from afternoon.
Highs: 7-8
Marlborough & Nelson
Any early morning showers with the chance of a flurry or two clear then mostly sunny with southwesterly winds.
Highs: 10-13
Canterbury
Sunny spells and mainly dry South Canterbury / inland areas. Showers along the coastal fringe, moving into Christchurch and more so Banks Peninsula especially. Showers heavy at times with small hail then starting to ease from afternoon at which point there could be a shower elsewhere. Snow may fall to sea level in the morning then lifting to 400m in the afternoon. Strong cold southwesterlies, gales about the coast then easing later in the day.

West Coast
Sunny with any early showers clearing Buller, southeasterlies tend southwest in the afternoon then back to the southeast in the evening.
Highs: 10-12
Southland & Otago
Wintry showers, snow flurries near or to sea level in the morning lifting to about 400m in the afternoon, clearing late evening. Cold southwesterlies strong about the coast.
Highs: 9-10
