Thursday’s national forecast – Cold front moves in

A cold front pushes north over the South Island today bringing rain, warm before the change moves in. Mainly settled for the North Island with a few isolated showers this afternoon for Northland and Bay Of Plenty, some may become heavy.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning cloud breaks to sun, isolated showers develop in the afternoon for Northland and Bay Of Plenty. Showers for Bay Of Plenty may become heavy in the ranges with thunder then clearing later on. Winds from the west or southwest, tending northerly in the afternoon for eastern areas, west to southwest winds push through to the east in the evening.
Highs: 21 – 23

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning cloud then sun and high cloud, northwesterly winds. Showers overnight or perhaps around dawn on Friday with a southerly change.
Highs: 19 – 22

Eastern North Island

Morning cloud, drizzle for Gisborne, cloud breaks by midday then expect sun and high cloud, north to northeasterly winds. Overnight rain for Wairarapa with southerlies.
Highs: 22 – 24

Wellington

Partly cloudy with breezy northerlies, overnight southerlies bring rain.
Highs: 19 – 22

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, northerlies tend to the west in the afternoon. Overnight southerlies bring rain for Marlborough.
Highs: 23 – 28

Canterbury

Mostly sunny and warm with some high cloud, rain pushes north late afternoon into the evening as northwesterlies change southerly.
Highs: 23 – 28

West Coast

Mostly cloudy, heavy rain for Fiordland spreads north in the afternoon, clearing from the south from evening. Northwesterlies change southwest in the afternoon, reaching Buller in the evening.
Highs: 16 – 22

Southland & Otago
Dry at first then expect showers, rain moves in around midday as northwesteriles change gusty west to southwest. Rain eases to showers in the afternoon, perhaps clearing for a time then beefy showers move in late evening for Southland, overnight for Otago, perhaps with a chance of hail. A few snow flurries overnight to 600m.
