Thursday’s national forecast – A cooler change in the eastern SI, high pressure lingers in the north (+5 maps)

High pressure still dominates NZ today but a weak cool change will cut daytime highs back in the eastern South Island.

Coastal Canterbury and Coastal Otago will be both be a few degrees cooler than normal for this time of year with a southerly and a few showers and drizzly patches moving northwards.

Nor’westers are still a little brisk through Cook Strait and Wellington.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly Sunny. Some cloudy spells possible. Light winds.
Highs: 22-29

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly Sunny, some cloudy spells in coastal areas with light variable winds or light nor’westers.
Highs: 20-25

Eastern North Island
Mostly Sunny with light winds, possibly from the south east.
Highs: 20 – 25

Wellington
Mostly sunny with light winds. A breezy sou’easter for some.
High: 20 – 25

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny with Easterly quarter winds.
Highs: 22 – 26

Canterbury
A mix of sun and cloud with cooler sou’easters. Can’t rule out a drizzle patch or coastal shower but should be isolated. Cooler today.
Highs: 15 – 21

West Coast
A mix of sun and cloud in coastal areas, sunny and warmer inland. Light winds from the sou’west.
Highs: 19 – 26

Southland & Otago
Cloudier and cooler with sou’easters for many. Showers and drizzle clearing in Southland and coastal Otago. Central Otago mild in the 20s but coastal Otago and coastal Southland in the teens today and noticeably cooler.
Highs: 13-24
