A front moves north over the country today but does weaken. Cloudy north of Canterbury with the odd drizzle patch, sunny areas develop about Southland, Otago and on the West Coast. Mostly sunny in the North Island however cloud and the odd shower moves onto the North Island’s east coast later in the day.

Upper North Island

Sunny areas and some cloud, light winds tend northerly or northeast. Expect mostly cloudy skies about Northland’s east coast where there is the low risk of a shower also during the day, easterly breezes there.

Lower North Island

Cloudy in the west with westerly quarter breezes, the odd shower also about Kapiti and Taranaki. Winds change south to southeasterly in the afternoon and may become a little brisk, sunny areas then develop. High cloud in the morning about Wellington and Wairarapa with northwesterlies, winds change southerly around midday bringing cloudy areas, the odd shower then moves into the Wairarapa however Wellington may remain dry. Mostly sunny about the Hawkes Bay with light winds, southerlies freshen at night bringing cloud and a risk of drizzle.
HIGHS: 21-24 in the west, 26-27 out east

Upper South Island

Morning showers clear on the West Coast with a few sunny breaks in the afternoon, light winds. Light winds for Nelson with cloudy areas and some sun, a few showers develop about the ranges in the afternoon although the city may remain dry. Sunny at first in Marlborough with light winds, southerlies freshen in the afternoon bringing cloud and a few showers which clear at night, Blenheim may remain mostly dry however. Cloudy and cool in Canterbury with southerly breezes, the odd drizzle patch during the day mainly inland near the foothills. Christchurch sees a few showers in the morning however clearing around midday.
HIGHS: 19-21 on the West Coast, 23 in Nelson and Marlborough, 16-17 in Canterbury

Lower South Island

Morning cloud breaks with sunny areas developing, south to southeast breezes. Cloud may hang around the North Otago coastline for much of the day with winds tending easterly in the evening.
