An anticyclone in the Tasman Sea directs a southwesterly airflow over the country today, showers gradually clear in the east and south of the South Island. Inland parts of the upper South Island and eastern regions of the North Island may become unstable this afternoon.

Auckland & Northland
Showers this morning, easing in the afternoon becoming few and far between
with sunny spells developing. Brisk west to southwest winds.
Highs: 22-23

Central North Island, Waikato & Bay Of
Plenty

Sunny spells and some cloud with southwesterly breezes, the odd shower
about western parts of the Central North Island and Waikato ease to clear early
afternoon.  About the eastern Central North Island and eastern Bay Of Plenty
expect southerlies to push through late afternoon / evening bringing showers,
some possibly heavy with thunderstorms.

Eastern North Island

Showers spread into Wairarapa in the morning then further north in the
afternoon, showers about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne could be heavy with
thunderstorms and hail then clearing in the evening. Mostly sunny skies
beforehand about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne until the southerly moves
through.
Highs: 21-22

Western North Island

Morning showers with westerlies changing southerly, showers clear by mid
afternoon with sunny spells increasing. Southerlies ease later in the evening.
About northern Taranaki expect sunny spells and brisk southwesterlies tending
southerly in the afternoon, chance of a shower around midday.
High: 18-19

Wellington

Showers, some heavy ease around midday then clear early afternoon. Sunny
spells then increase. Strong southerlies ease overnight.
Highs: 16-17

Nelson

Mostly sunny with morning southwesterlies then afternoon northerlies.
Chance of an isolated afternoon shower mainly inland then clearing by
evening.
Highs: 19-20

Marlborough

Sunny spells with breezy southerlies, chance afternoon isolated showers
especially inland then clearing by evening.
High: 19

Canterbury

Showers, some may be heavy then clearing this morning, becoming mostly
sunny in the afternoon with brisk cold southwesterlies dying out at night.
Highs: 16-17

West Coast

Chance of an early showers then mostly sunny with west to southwest breezes
dying out in the evening.
High: 19

Coastal Otago

Morning showers clear, cloudy spells and the odd sunny break for the rest
of the day. Strong southwesterlies ease evening and die out by midnight.
Highs: 14

Central Otago

Sunny spells with south to southwest breezes, picking up for a time in the
afternoon then dying out later in the evening.
High: 19

Southland

Early showers clear then expect a mix of cloudy and sunny spells for the
rest of the day. Cool southwesterlies die out in the evening.
High: 15
