Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….
SOME INSTABILITY IN THE NORTH
Parts of the North Island have some instability this afternoon. Two spots of interest, Waikato northwards and inland Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.
The advantage any potential storms have for the upper North Island is higher surface moisture and warmer surface temperatures than in the east so I would place chances a bit higher there. This would be the reason for the low risk of severe storms bringing the potential for very heavy downpours north of the Waikato, it is a low risk though so not a guarantee but just a note that possibility exists.

COOL AND WET – SOUTH ISLAND
Temperatures are a bit cool for the South Island today, high’s are mostly in the mid teens, similar again tomorrow however the West Coast and parts of Southland / Otago spring to life with temperatures getting into the late teens, maybe even hitting 20.
The North Island has warmer temperatures, high’s in the early twenties are likely for the upper North Island today and tomorrow. Cooling down in the east on Friday a touch as cloud cover will be thicker with showers and southeasterlies, temperatures remain a tad cool on Saturday although afternoon temperatures will still likely by in the high teens.
MIST OF FOG SAT / SUN – SOUTH ISLAND
High pressure sits out to the east this weekend, the South Island is going to be mainly settled, cool mornings and a northeasterly airflow means there is a chance of mist or fog for some inland areas. It should be mainly sunny by day but northeasterlies may be a little fresh down along the eastern coastline.
