Thursday’s headlines (x2): A cold start, Day time highs gradually increasing

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

A COLD START

With high pressure moving in last night and clear skies, this means temperatures are cold to start especially for inland areas.

About mountainous parts of the South Island a frost is possible this morning. While elsewhere may not be that cold, you can see in the map below that many apart from the coastal fringes of the South Island will likely be sitting between 0 and 5 degrees.

Inland parts of the North Island are cold to start also but not as cold, only higher parts of the Central Plateau have the risk of a light frost this morning.

TEMPERATURES INCREASE THIS WEEKEND

The upper North Island has afternoon highs in the late teens for the next three days, it’s the eastern South Island which sees a boost this weekend perhaps getting into the early twenties.

On Sunday and Monday the western North Island sees highs in the early twenties.

Looking further ahead, there are suggestions Canterbury may reach the mid twenties around the 3rd / 4th May thanks to a northerly airflow. We shall see!
