Thursday’s Headlines: Heavy rain warnings – North Island, Thunder risk – North Island, Settled further south

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

HEAVY RAIN WARNINGS – NORTH ISLAND

A northeasterly airflow lies over the country, there are various fronts in this airflow over the North Island bringing rain. Combine the two and areas exposed to the east / northeast will likely see some heavy rain today.

THUNDER RISK – NORTH ISLAND

North of about Waikato brings a chance of thunder today, more so this afternoon. Eastern areas have a higher chance of this rather than in the west.

WEST COAST / FAR SOUTH – SETTLED

The West Coast and far south of the South Island has settled weather today, there should be sun too. The West Coast has temperatures in the late teens especially Hokitika northwards.

Inland parts of Southland and Otago will be cold though, frosts this morning and again overnight with fog patches, some fog may hang in certain valleys all day keeping day time high’s not very warm at all.

The weather is very similar again on Friday however there will be more cloud for Southland and coastal Otago, Central Otago will be similar to today. The West Coast has reasonable weather on Friday with temperatures reaching into the late teens again.
