Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
CALM FOR ONCE
The weather is mainly settled and calm around New Zealand today thanks to high pressure, something we haven’t had much of lately. Temperatures for the South Island bounce back a little today.
We do have cloud along the West Coast though and showers for South Westland, perhaps rain for Fiordland, especially later. There is the chance of a shower brushing eastern Northland and north of Mahia Peninsula a few showers clear this morning from the south.
Due to the settled conditions fog may form overnight for the upper North Island.
HEAVY RAIN WEST COAST – FRIDAY
As northerlies strengthen over the South Island on Friday expect rain in the west, heavy falls for South Westland especially from afternoon with a chance of thunderstorms, pushing a little further northwards overnight reaching about Greymouth.
Metservice have a few rain watches out, you can see them here.
HOWS OUR LOW LOOKING MID NEXT WEEK?
Well first, one must mention the front sweeping in from the northwest over the course of Sunday and Monday (28th / 29th May). There will be some heavy rain as this front moves through, mainly in the northeast (eastern Northland through to East Cape), also the top of the South Island and down along the West Coast.
For the most part we don’t see too many issues from the above mentioned rain but with the ground already sodden it’s not like we need any more at the moment.
Now onto the low we mentioned yesterday for mid to late next week, coming in from the north. Well look below, thar she blows, it looks to be offshore now to the northeast missing the North Island all together. But once again we’ll keep an eye on it, this could change.
