Thursday Newsfeed: High pressure in the north today but weekend low pressure brings some wet weather

It’s been a while but today high pressure is crossing over the top of New Zealand bringing light winds and possibly some inland fog patches or morning cloud. But elsewhere much of the country has a windier nor’wester blowing through.

Let’s get into the forecast for Thursday

RAIN:
Rain sets into the lower West Coast today and into Southland and Otago. Elsewhere is mostly dry but some wet weather moves up the western side of the country later today or tonight.

WIND:
Winds are light over the top of the North Island under high pressure but windier weather kicks in for the lower two thirds of the country with windiest weather around the lower and eastern North Island and the eastern South Island

TEMPERATURES:
It will be milder than average for much of the country thanks to the north-west airflows in many regions. However the lower South Island will get colder air, mostly around Southland and then Otago.

THIS WEEKEND:
Low pressure and wet weather from the west moves in and cross the country. It’s a bit borderline in some areas as to how much rain there will be due to the weak nature of the weekend low pressure zone – so forecasts may still chop and change a bit in the days ahead.
