Some thunderstorms have developed over the last couple of hours in the Waitomo and Ruapehu areas with a severe thunderstorm warning in place from the Government forecaster.

Other parts of the central North island have also seen some heavy rain and thunder rolling through.

The situation may continue until later tonight and conditions are expected to ease overnight
