Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..
RAINFALL FOR THE NEXT THREE DAYS
Today a low pressure centre sits to the northeast of the North Island and moves slowly away to the southeast, East Cape up through to eastern Northland has showers or perhaps some rain as this low moves by. You can see this in the rain accumulation map below.
Secondly we have a few showers for Southland this morning then spreading north along the east coast this afternoon, later this evening and overnight Canterbury through to southern Marlborough sees rain for a time.
Expect showers for the east coast of the North Island on Sunday, a few isolated showers for Waikato, the Central Plateau, Coromandel and perhaps Auckland into the afternoon. Rain for Canterbury through to Marlborough eases in the morning to showers, clearing evening. Tasman and Nelson see a few showers develop in the morning, drying out in the evening.
Monday (Labour Day) is dry for most of New Zealand for most of the day, however…… we do see a few light showers for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne clearing in the afternoon. The upper North Island has a mostly cloudy day with a few showers. Overnight rain moves into South Westland thanks to a front pushing in from the Tasman Sea, a few spits may spread into Southland and Otago.
CLOUD COVER NEXT THREE DAYS
The three images below show the situation regarding cloud cover over New Zealand at 3:00pm each day. The more filled in or solid the shading means cloud is typically thicker and lower in nature, if it is lightly shaded / transparent that means high cloud.
Western regions have the better conditions today and Sunday, the east finally brightens up on Monday.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
High pressure gradually expands over New Zealand on Sunday pushing in from the Tasman Sea, quite cloudy in the east with showers, sunnier conditions in the west and for Southland / Otago.
North Island
Mostly cloudy in the east with showers, easing evening, cool southeasterlies. A mix of sun and cloud out west, a few isolated showers develop for the Central North Island, Waikato, Coromandel and perhaps Auckland in the afternoon, winds from the south or southwest however coming in from the southeast for the Central North Island and Bay Of Plenty into the afternoon.
South Island
Mostly sunny along the West Coast, morning cloud for Southland and Otago then becoming mostly sunny, winds from the south. Canterbury through into Nelson has a mostly cloudy day with easterly quarter winds, rain for Canterbury and Marlborough eases to showers in the morning, clearing evening.
