Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….
ANOTHER FROSTY START
It was frosty yesterday morning, a smattering of -5 to -6 degree temperatures for inland parts of the South Island, the North Island wasn’t as cold but still reached 0 or just below in some spots.
This morning we have frosts again, not as cold as yesterday but none the less, cold!
COLD FRONT SUNDAY – NEXT WEEK UNSTABLE
A cold front moves northwards over the South Island on Sunday, it’s more later in the day but this will bring heavy rain to the West Coast, perhaps some thunder.
The front reaches the North Island on Monday and brings rain in the west and south.
From about Tuesday we have the potential for some instability thanks to cold upper air, the West Coast sees showers on Tuesday with a risk of thunderstorms and hail. This risk may spread to the western North Island on Wednesday.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
A northwesterly airflow lies over the country, a cold front moves northwards over the South Island with a southwest change in behind.
North Island
Areas of cloud in the west with a shower or two, showers pick up late afternoon or evening. Sun for Bay Of Plenty and in the east but expect increasing high cloud. Winds mostly from the north or northwest, perhaps tending more westerly later in the day in the west. Temperatures in the mid teens in the east and for the upper North Island.
South Island
Showers for the West Coast, heavy rain about Fiordland from midday then spreading northwards, a chance of thunder. Dry in the east with sun / high cloud. Showers develop about Southland in the afternoon, reaching Otago in the evening then South Canterbury overnight with southwesterlies. Later in the evening / overnight there may be rain for Otago.
