Weekend Headlines (x3): Kevin becomes major Category 5 cyclone, Sunday’s forecast, + more rain in the South Island

Here’s what is making the weather headlines…

SOME RAIN EASTERN SOUTH ISLAND

Expect some further rain or showers in the eastern South Island, North Otago up into Canterbury.

Marlborough and perhaps Nelson starts to see some rain from Sunday afternoon, rain eases for Canterbury on Sunday evening.

WEATHER ON SUNDAY

A southerly airflow lies over New Zealand bringing some wet weather in the east and drier weather out west, some rain may spill over into the West Coast however as a trough pushes northwards over the South Island during the day.

North Island

Mostly cloudy skies in the east with showers and southerly winds. Out west expect a mix of sun and cloud, mainly dry however south of Auckland showers develop in the afternoon possibly heavy with thunderstorms. Northland is mainly dry.

South Island

The odd shower about the far south (Southland / Otago), clearing in the afternoon with sunny spells increasing, cold overnight temperatures. Canterbury has rain, clearing from the south evening on wards, southerly winds. Nelson and Marlborough have a few showers, turning to rain in the afternoon then easing or clearing overnight. The West Coast has some sun but watch for some scattered rain in the morning for South Westland then afternoon for North Westland, winds from the southeast.
