A northeasterly airflow lies over the country moving around a large high out to the east, over the Pacific. A front in this airflow pushes down the West Coast of the South Island bringing some heavy rain.
North Island
A mix of mid and high level cloud, expect showers in the northeast (East Cape through to Northland). Taranaki may catch a shower or two also. Winds from the northeast.
South Island
Rain for western Marlborough through to Tasman, heavy falls for areas west of Nelson, easing this evening. Heavy falls for North Westland, the odd shower further south although heavy rain moves into Fiordland overnight while concurrently drying out north of Westport. Eastern Marlborough through to North Canterbury skies are mostly cloudy with the odd spit, cloud breaks up late afternoon or evening. Southland, Otago and South Canterbury up to about Banks Peninsula has sun and some high cloud. North to northeasterly winds for most although Canterbury has winds that are light and variable.
