To cut it short, the North Island gets the nicest weather while the South Island comes off seconds best. But as often is the case there are exceptions, this will ring very true for Wellington.
We are still in a fairly northwesterly based pattern, the North Island for this evening though for the most part is under a ridge of high pressure especially the upper half so it will see a settled evening.
Auckland. Expect sunny spells this evening with westerly breeze which eases later in the evening. Overnight things don’t change much, winds will still be from the west but will be light, expect a few areas of cloud and a low of 11 degrees.
Wellington. Your in for more strong to gale northerly winds this evening, gusts may reach 110 km/h. Expect some cloud and the chance of a spot of rain or two. It should be mainly dry however, a greater risk of showers develops later in the evening or overnight. Temperature dip down to 12 degrees overnight. It will be an interesting game in the capital tonight, the kickers will certainly have to be on their game while contending with strong winds.
Christchurch. Strong northwesterlies gusting to gale force will ease during this evening, there could be some cloud with the odd shower spreading from the west early in the evening but hopefully if those showers are about they clear. There is a lower risk one or two may continue through till around midnight but it should be mainly dry. Conditions should be fairly mild this evening but dipping down to 8 degrees overnight.

Still blowing like 40 of them here. More trees down.
Can’t wait until the sun drops away reducing the wind flow.
My see some lightning along the Alps tonight.
