It was hot in the north, central and eastern areas today with plenty of sunshine.30-35 degree temperatures were recorded in many areas.
The highest temperature today went to Culverden and Hanmer Springs on 35 and Nelson and Tauranga get a special mention, as neither city doesn’t often top the 30 degree mark, as they did today.
Canterbury continued to fry whereas the only centre in the whole country not to hit the 20s or 30s was Invercargill on 17 degrees.
Tonight should generally be a warm one across most of the country and then tomorrow, a cooler change moving in from the south, should gradually lower the temperatures over the next 24-36 hours, but more heat precedes the change.

Drove from Nelson to Chch today.
Very warm and sunny whole way up until around Amberley where it was cloudy. Everything is so dry.
Recorded 36 degrees somewhere (near Culverden I think, but this was with a car thermometer).
Nice not having Chch too hot.
Looking forward to a good soaking soon i hope!

Your car thermometer is pretty accurate as Culverden officially topped 35 as did Hamner Springs. It is certainly dry too.
Christchurch hit 30 late morning but cooled to 26 most of the afternoon with a sea breeze. Now a very pleasant 22.

It was indeed officially 37 as the maximum for the month but 40s were topped unofficially on 2 or 3 occasions.
Whichever way you look at it, it was very hot in a number of areas and very dry too!

Apart from probably Greymouth perhaps New Plymouth,Auckland now must be one of the few to reach 30°c this summer.

Hi Andrew
I think there is a little more chance that we will(70% chance). The anticyclones may not be quite so dominant as low pressures may start to creep south, north of NZ.
Only time will tell and it looks like another warm one tomorrow.
Cheers
