A ridge of high pressure brings frosty conditions to the upper South Island tonight and the lower North Island (mainly west of the eastern ranges). Frosts about the Central Plateau won’t be terribly cold but lows of 0 to -1 are still possible. About Canterbury through to Nelson / Marlborough lows of between 0 and -2 are possible where winds drop out and skies are clear. About coastal fringe areas temperatures will tend to keep just above zero.
Easing southeasterlies about the eastern North Island bring Friday’s coldest temperatures to Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. The South Island starts to warm up with an increasing northerly airflow. Kaitaia still pips all other centres for the days high on 18 degrees.
