A series of cold fronts push over New Zealand today in a cold west to southwesterly airflow.
Certainly quite cold over much of the South Island today or at least it will become cold, winds strong from the west or southwest for most. The North Island sees average to warm temperatures, just a bit cool about the Central North Island. Winds about the North Island especially in the west will be strong at times from afternoon.
Naturally a cold day leads to a cold night for the South Island, a windy atmosphere prevents temperatures dipping below zero however. Mostly average overnight lows for the North Island, quite windy though with westerlies.
