Expect cool southwesterlies for the South Island today bringing average to low temperatures in the east. The West Coast benefits however bringing slightly warmer than average afternoon highs due to the sheltering affect of the Southern Alps. The North Island has average to slightly above average day times highs in a northerly airflow. The warmest day time highs are likely about Hawkes bay / Gisborne and Northland getting up to 15 to 17 degrees.
Southerly quarter winds spread over the North Island tonight bringing cool temperatures. A cool night ahead for most of the South Island although not overly cold as wind and cloud keep temperatures a little above freezing in the east. Some inland spots especially in the west can expect a light frost by dawn on Tuesday.
