A cold front pushing northwards over the lower South Island this evening moves northwards overnight, in its wake comes cold temperatures as can be seen in the map below. The North Island is still normal to warmer than normal due to pre frontal northwesterlies.
Central Otago sees tonights coldest overnight lows getting down to -2 or -3 degrees by dawn on Friday. The warmest spots will likely be Hawkes Bay and Auckland through to Northland getting down to about 13 degrees.
Eastern and northern parts of the North Island may show that tomorrow will be warmer than normal, and that is true for the morning but from afternoon a cold front will move in bringing a cool down in temperatures. Highs for the South Island will certainly be cooler than today but due to the airflow tending to the west fairly quickly in the morning it’s not as cold as it could be, this is especially true for Canterbury.
Expect temperatures in the late teens for Hawkes Bay / Gisborne and Bay Of Plenty through to Northland in the morning before cooling down from afternoon. Tomorrow’s coldest temperatures go to Wellington and Southland.
