Cold overnight temperatures can be expected for most of New Zealand tonight as shown in the map below. Light frosts are likely for inner parts of the North Island especially in the west Waikato southwards getting down to 0 or -1 degrees. The South Island gets frosts also with inland Canterbury and Marlborough getting down to -3 in spots, frosts are also likely down to the coast in many areas.
A northwesterly airflow builds over the South Island on Saturday bringing in warmer than average temperatures, the North Island is mostly average with a cool departing southerly airflow in the east bringing a chilly feel to the likes of Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.
