A slow-moving front weakens as it tracks up the North Island today, bringing rain and showers to the west, while high pressure moves back in over the South Island.
When there’s rain affecting the North Island, it’s not often lately that Auckland is spared from a wet forecast, but tomorrow is one of those days. A fine day with Northwest breezes can be expected across Northland, Auckland and the Bay of Plenty, albeit afternoon cloudy periods and a possible light shower may pop up, predominantly south of Auckland.
Taranaki will cop the brunt of the country’s rainfall tomorrow, with rain developing early and producing some heavy falls throughout the day. The fringe effects of the front will extend across the Waikato, Central North Island and Whanganui as well, with a cloudy, breezy and showery day in store. High cloud in the East with some possible ‘spillover’ rain about the Southern Hawke’s Bay during the afternoon. Conditions will clear early in the lower North, setting up a mostly sunny and settled day in the capital. Mild temperatures across the Island ranging from 17 to 20 degrees for most, and up to 23 degrees in the Northeast.
Any morning showers are expected to clear as cloud breaks and sunny spells increase along the South Island’s West Coast. It’ll be a mainly fine across most of the remainder of the Island, barring a cloudy and cool day along the East Coast, with winds from the easterly quarter. A light shower may be possible there. In the Far South about Fiordland and Southland, cloud cover and strengthening North-Westerlies are due to develop through the day, with scattered rain about Fiordland and the odd shower further East. Cool temperatures in general across the South Island, particularly at first for Central Otago, but slowly climbing into the mid-teens for most regions.
