A run down on today’s weather…
Sun?
Not a great deal – the South Island’s eastern and northern regions will likely see the most sun.
Rain?
A period of rain or showers for pretty much all of New Zealand. A cold front is weakening as it heads north east over the North Island today… so showers in the west and a spit or two in the east….clearing in most places by afternoon or evening.
Temps?
Much of New Zealand will be around the 20 degree mark, give or take 2 degrees. But, there are 2 exceptions – the North Island’s east coast, likely to be in the mid 20s… and the South Island’s south coast – likely to be more winter-like in the lower teens.
Wind?
West or south-west winds will build over the North Island today and the South Island tomorrow. Nothing extreme though.
Thunderstorms?
Our government forecaster, MetService, is predicting a HIGH chance of thunderstorms this morning across the West Coast, and a MODERATE chance of thunderstorms over Canterbury and northern Otago this afternoon.
Keep an eye on our FREE Lightning Detector to track thunderstorms in your area!
Yesterday the cold change brought a severe thunderstorm with localised flooding to Invercargill.

‘and the South Island’s south coast – likely to be more winter-like in the lower teens.’
It most certainly doesn’t feel winter-like down here, lol. (my reading is currently 17 degrees. At this time of year, any changes are ‘cool’ rather than cold.

Hi Lindsay, you’re absolutely right! When that story was written the predicted high for Southland was about 13 degrees today…that’s now lifted to around 16/17 due to the wind being more westerly than southerly. Saved at the last minute!
Tomorrow may be cooler though… our predicted high is 14.
Thanks for the update!

Edit – Officially 14 degrees in Invercargill at 11am. And the word "cold" is certainly subjective!

Lol, the heat in the sun at this time of the year is warm enough to help lessen the effects of any cool winds. Right now, I’m still comfortable outside in a t-shirt.
