UPDATED 4:13pm — A strong earthquake has just hit the lower North Island, with people across the country saying they felt the quake.
Photos are now appearing on Twitter of damage inside homes and offices.
Prelim info from GeoNet says the quake was Magnitude 6.3 and was just 10kms deep, located 10kms east of Eketahuna.
It’s prelim intensity rating was MM8 – which is classed as “damaging”.
TranzMetro has suspended Wellington rail services until further notice.

News is coming through that some bloke in Whitby is the cause of these Earthquakes each six months. Please tell him to stop painting his home.

Hi guys I live in whitby though not as big as the sneddon one here the house did a double shake, on the day of the 6.6 I was climbing up and down a high ladder. Today I had recommenced some more painting and lol another earthquake the same day I have been climbing up and down a ladder. I hope everyone is ok close to the epicentre. As for me no more painting today. I have put away my ladder.
