Stormy weather hits roads

> From the WeatherWatch archives

High winds and torrential rain are to blame for Alpine roads struggling to cope with the elements in the South Island.

Arthurs Pass is closed due to flooding and the situation will be updated throughout the day.
Lewis Pass is marginal but open.
Severe gales in the area mean high sided vehicles are a risk in the current conditions.

State highway 6 on the West Coast is also marginal due to flooding but is open and motorists are advised to use extreme caution.

South Otago is also being hit by high winds and drivers are asked to take care between Clinton and Dunedin.

Holidaymakers are advised to be aware of the conditions as rivers, lakes and streams are now swollen or in flood.

Gales and heavy rain are expected to last throughout much of the day in these areas before a gradual clearance tonight.
