Earlier Update

Well we’re at the half way mark of the week and I think we could argue that northern New Zealand is in Summer mode while southern New Zealand is still in Spring mode!

A low will develop off the Fiordland coast today and that’s going to drag in some heavy rain for central and western parts of the South Island.  It’s prompted our government forecaster, MetService, to issue several rain warnings which you’ll find here.

The South Island will feel strengthening winds today, rising to gale force overnight tonight and into tomorrow for inland regions…inland Canterbury and alpine regions will be most exposed.

Meanwhile in the North Island summer makes a return with high air pressure stopping the onslaught of this southern system.  The further north or north-east you are, the sunnier and hotter the weather will be.

Eastern parts of the North Island, like Masterton, Hastings, Napier, Wairoa, and Gisborne are expected to reach into the late 20s today fanned by a hot nor’wester.  Temperatures around 27 or 28 are likely with inland areas, away from out weather stations, potentially reaching around 30.

Further north and Aucklanders can expect a better day than yesterday with sunnier, drier, weather and temperatures climbing a few degrees higher as that sou’wester dies out and turns nor’west by evening.

The Northwester is becoming gusty here in CHCH now and we are sitting on 27 degrees with a 38km/h NW. Humidity = 26%. The grass around Christchurch is very brown and we have only had about 3mm of rain in the last 25-26 days with consistantly warm temperatures.
