Spring afternoon sees wind and warmth

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Many centres across both islands are enjoying a fairly mind but windy day today.

Gusty nor’westers ahead of a fairly weak frontal system are helping boost temperatures into the mid to late teens from Christchurch to Northland.

Some of the strongest winds are being recorded across Auckland with gusts over 50km/h but gusts to 80km/h on the Manukau Heads.

Wellington has a strong northerly but is cooler on 14 degrees than Auckland’s 17.

Whangarei has 20, while in contrast Gore – at the other end of the country – only has 7.

I live in Papatoetoe and last night the power was out for approx one hour after thunder and lightening, and by 7am today a wooden gate, 6ft tall had been blown off its hinges and was lying on the footpath.
