We have spring-like weather this week with a colder start in the south today but more hot summer-like nor-westers this week too. Significant storms well south of the country and large highs offshore near NZ are creating the westerly driven weather – but large high pressure east of the North Island will also help inject sub-tropical air into the country at times too.
Let’s get into the forecast for Monday to start with…
RAIN:
A front is falling apart over the North Island on Monday bringing some patchy rain or showers. Rain and showers also affect the southern half of the West Coast and parts of Southland and Otago. A dusting of snow is likely on mountains in the lower part of the South Island.
WIND:
Westerly quarter winds dominate the country on Monday with many places having westerlies or nor-westers.
TEMPERATURES:
Temperatures are down in the lower half of the South Island but for many other regions Monday is similar to how warm Sunday was.
WEEK AHEAD
High pressure moves closer to the North Island on Tuesday but storms well south of the country still fuel westerly quarter winds. Rain and showers are likely in Fiordland and Westland, and a few showers are possible in Southland and the very top of the North Island, but likely won’t be much for most.
Wednesday’s forecast is similar to Tuesday but perhaps a little cooler in the eastern North Island and the North Island looks dry now too.
On Thursday NZ is stuck between a large high to our east and a big storm to our south. This creates more nor-westers over NZ, more West Coast rain or showers and possibly some showers in the top half of the North Island. The sub-tropical nor-westers will bring heat back to the eastern North Island.
And Friday looks similar to Thursday.
