A new wave of wintry conditions is this evening descending on Southland bringing strong winds, driving rain and a developing bitterly cold wind chill.
The temperature is now falling as this second shot of cold air moves in and tonight sleet is expected to sea level with snow falling to very low levels this evening, or overnight, too.
The wind chill is expected to be as low as -5 overnight in Invercargill predicts WeatherWatch.co.nz.
Already conditions across highland farms have deteriorated where wind chills are around -10 and colder even higher up.
It’s not as cold in Invercargill yet. The city currently has 6 degrees and winds gusting to 60km/h but colder air will continue to move in all night.
