Severe weather returns to NZ tonight/Thursday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

MetService has issued another set of severe weather warnings this evening for New Zealand with severe gales again being the main problem.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the storm from the weekend is now long gone but in its wake we are now caught up in the roaring 40s, the belt of gales which normally roar over the Southern Ocean.

Thunderstorms, squalls, gales and gusts over 120km/h are again likely for western areas with WeatherWatch.co.nz predicting more gales in Auckland as well during Thursday morning as yet another cold front races by.

Severe weather warnings cover Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Taumarunui, Rotorua, Taupo, Taihape, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Taranaki, Wellington, Dunedin, Otago and Southland.

See the full list of warnings here.

Hi team, 11.15pm and the wind becoming stronger with some very strong gusts.
Temps 3deg, baro 1011 wind from the w-sw and bitterly cold. Had some snow flakes fall this afternoon over the ranges SH5, too windy to settle tho.
Despite the wind, cold etc its a nice bright night with the moonlight.
cheers

Hey there

It’s fair and quite windy in Christchurch tonight with some big gusts. It’s also 11 degrees.

Hi, What do expect the weather to be like tomorrow from 11am – I’m flying from the Far North to Wellington. Do I need to take Valium? -:)

WW Forecast Team on 22/09/2010 10:21am

Well there’s no doubt it will be a bumpy flight at times – but the good news is that 11am should be when most of the biggest squalls should be departing the Wellingto Auckland leg of the trip.

There may, however, be some delays with small planes flying out of the Far North and into Auckland.  Just so you’re aware.  But the front that’s moving in will weaken significantly as it moves into Northland.

Our advice – turbulence is just pot holes in the sky.  Let them relax you like bumps in the road do to kids in a car!

I’ll just pretend I’m driving on Far North roads then:)

Getting very windy in Westwood (east coast just south of Dunedin) and snowing at the moment we are more or less at sea level so it’s pretty cold out side too, we lost power about 1 & 1/2 hours ago, the lines company are not saying how long it will be out for.

Culverden. Very gusty NW winds just started (were NW all day, but now really bad). Even the SkyTV clicking in and out!

Squally showers also. Probably a little sleety too by the feel of them
