Saturday’s national forecast – Showers in the east

A southerly airflow lies over New Zealand today with showers for eastern regions. Showers may become heavy with thunderstorms about the ranges of Hawkes Bay / Gisborne, also Nelson. Drier and sunnier out west.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mist or fog possible morning and night, mainly inland away from the coast. Mostly sunny otherwise. Bay Of Plenty could see evening showers. Southwest winds, an afternoon sea breeze may develop about eastern coastal parts.
Highs: 24-26

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy, chance of a shower, southerly quarter winds develop. Some inland areas may see showers become heavy with thunder then easing later in the day.
Highs: 20-23

Eastern North Island

Showers about Wairarapa spread northwards in the afternoon as southerly winds freshen, sun before showers move in. The ranges of Hawkes Bay and Gisborne may see showers become heavy with thunderstorms then easing at night.
Highs: 20-24

Wellington

Rain, clearing in the afternoon but there still may be the odd shower. Cool southerly winds.
Highs: 18-21

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly cloudy for Marlborough with occasional showers, east to northeasterly winds. Nelson has some sun with light winds tending to the north midday on wards, isolated showers develop in the afternoon, some may become heavy with thunder especially about the ranges then easing later.
Highs: 21-23

Canterbury

Mostly cloudy with a few showers, rain develops about South Canterbury in the evening pushing northwards overnight. Southerly winds.
Highs: 16-18

West Coast

South Westland is mostly sunny, further north expect a mix of sun and cloud. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 19-24

Southland & Otago
Occasional showers, especially evening, north Otago may see evening rain. Sunny spells start to break through from afternoon for Southland. Southwesterly winds about coastal parts, tending more southerly inland.
Highs: 15-16
